Approximately 7.7 million people in Peru have no access to electricity and rely on using candles and paraffin to light and heat their homes which are not only dangerous and polluting, but cost up to a fifth of the average families income. In 2008 the Koru Foundation funded the installation of 21 100w turbines to provide power for homes in the village of Alumbre in the Cajamarca region of Peru as well as a 500w system which is providing power for the local school.

Quote: “I used to complain about the wind because it took away the light because my candles would blow out. Now the wind gives me light. When the project first began I had no idea wind could provide light.” Alvaro Hernandez, Alumbre resident.
