Much of Nepal’s rural population live in remote mountainous locations which are difficult and expensive to connect to the central power grid, leaving communities reliant on kerosene, wood and agricultural waste which are not only damaging for people’s health but also the environment. In 2007 the Koru Foundation funded the installation of 3 micro wind turbines in the village of Phakel in the Kathmandu valley which are providing a sustainable source of energy to power lights and appliances in two small holdings and a school and community centre which used to have to close in the winter months when it was too cold and dark to teach.

Quote: “The best thing about having electricity from the wind turbine is that now there is no smoke from the lighting and we don’t have to spend any more money on kerosene”, Kamala Pakharin, Phakel resident
