Victory for Sea Power!

25th October 2011

It’s been a great week for wave and tidal energy in the UK. Last week the government announced its review of the level of support given to different types of renewable energy, and wave and tidal was an area that came up trumps.

When it comes to energy sources, with over 11,000 miles of coastline, the UK isn’t short of sea, and where there’s sea there’s the potential to harness energy from the waves and tides. But while there is a lot of experience in capturing marine power, there’s still a big jump to be made before we can start using it to generate large amounts of electricity.

That’s why the latest support for is a great step towards getting more wave and tidal arrays set up.

We’ve added our voices to the call to government to help establish marine energy, and the government has responded by not only increasing support to the industry, it has also made £20 million available from the Low Carbon Innovation Fund.

Additionally the Scottish government is also putting forward £18 million. That’s a huge boost of confidence for the developers who are going to be building the pilot projects and investing in the technology we need to get our coastal waters generating energy.

It will also help keep the UK at the forefront of wave and tidal power, ahead of the United States and China. And it won’t just be generating power, it’ll be helping to support an industrial base which is projected to provide 10,000 jobs by 2020 and nearly 20,000 by 2035.

So thanks to all of you for your support, whether you’ve emailed your MP, taken part in any of our events, tweeted about the campaign or just made sure people are aware of how important it is that we support wave power, we did this with your help!
