Shropshire Star makes 'slight' exaggeration...

8th September 2010

It's not just building wind farms that's controversial - transporting large turbine components through towns can cause controversy in itself.

This has been the case in Welshpool, where the local town council has come out against any transport of components through the town on the grounds that it will disrupt traffic and potentially damage property. The first trial run has now been undertaken, and according to the Shropshire Star saw protesters lining the streets to stop the turbines being transported through the town. They illustrated the story with this picture of the protest:

But what really happened? Firstly, it took the truck around 7 minutes to get through the town, expanded to 20 minutes by pausing on the outskirts to let traffic pass. Secondly, this is the truck entering the town to 'streets lined with protesters':

Thirdly, this is the Shropshire Star reporter gathering together the eight actual protesters into a group for the photo taken above:

Could it be that the people of Welshpool aren't as opposed to turbine components coming through town as the Shropshire Star would like you to believe?

Perish the thought.

What is the other option? Carry on using fossil feul, 'til it runs out? Aren't wind turbines better than the housing estates, being built in the green belts?
