Gearing up for Wind Week 2010
Wind farms are no stranger to local opposition. Often, the renewable and wind energy sector receives objections from those who are unaware of the vital importance of developing sustainable energy resources. In the case of onshore wind farms, a minority of vocal opponents in one region can lead to the misconception all residents would oppose a wind farm in their local area. In the majority of cases, this is simply not an accurate picture of the truth.
In order to demonstrate our support for onshore wind farms we’re holding our annual celebration of wind energy, Wind Week 2010, from 12th -19th June. Ten wind farms across the country will be open to public visitors, alongside a variety of other events including the launch of several offshore wind projects, visitors’ days at renewable energy companies, and a wind turbine in Leicester Square!
The events are being held to show there is a strong majority in favour of wind farms and ensure that WIMBYs, those that support wind in their back yard, become more vocal at the local level. Right now, only 25% of applications for wind farms are approved at the local level, and are often rejected by council planning bodies. We’re also aiming to dispel some of the myths around wind energy, by letting people get up close with wind turbines and wind farm sites.
