Renewable energy ‘hangs’ in the balance

7th May 2010

This morning, after one of the closest general elections in a generation, Britain woke up to a hung parliament. In the run up to the election green issues, renewable energy and climate change built momentum as a key electoral issue and featured frequently in the pre-election debates. Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg called climate change the ‘biggest challenge facing the UK.’ The electorate also proved green issues matter as last night we saw Caroline Lucas clinch the title of Britain's first Green Party MP, after winning the Brighton Pavilion seat. This is good news for those of us keen to get green and renewable energy further up the political agenda.

However, the Lib Dems and Greens were not the only parties to highlight the importance of climate change ahead of the election date. Labour’s Ed Miliband launched the party's green manifesto claiming "tackling climate change isn't just about avoiding disaster but also ensuring we have a prosperous future and a fair one” and the Conservatives touted the line 'vote blue, go green.'

As the parties work together to make the best they can of the hung parliament, it’s important climate change and renewable energy remain high on the political agenda. We’re continuing the WIMBY campaign to lobby our local MPs to support wind energy. We’re currently updating our database to reflect the changes in elected officials to ensure your email of support is directed to the right person.
