Environment low down on the election agenda. Help us lobby MPs to change this!

19th April 2010

The Guardian today posted an article highlighting the lack of priority given to environmental issues in the run up to the election. Last week the three main parties put forward their manifestos for public scrutiny.  As The Guardian notes one factor was immediately obvious – the environment section was almost three-quarters of the way down all of the parties’ manifestos.  Clearly, economic issues are front of mind but its worrying that the environment has featured so little in the election campaign to date.

This conclusion substantiates research carried out for RenewableUK by polling company ComRes, which polled Prospective Parliamentary Candidates (PPCs) and shows a clear disconnect between the political parties green manifestos and voter opinion. 42% of PCCs disagreed with the statement that ‘expansion of onshore wind is essential if the UK is to deliver on its renewable energy targets.’  However, public opinion wants to put renewable energy back in the spotlight – year after year, over 80% of the people in this country support further deployment of wind energy.

To help put the environment and wind energy back on the agenda, join us and directly lobby your local MPs.  Get them to sign up to the ‘I AM A WIMBY' (Wind In My Back Yard) pledge, showing their support for wind energy and stating that they’d be happy to have a wind farm built near their home.  Just visit our main page and click on the pink button to locate and email your local candidates http://www.embracemyplanet.com/campaigns
